summary
The presented work is devoted to the development of the Balkan countries and the entire region as well as the policy of the main superpowers during World War II. Unlike the existing major works dealing with British or German policies in the region or the development of individual countries during the war, this is the first synthetic work which summarizes the current state of knowledge about the collaboration and resistance and the phenomenon of the civil war in south-eastern Europe. Thus it helps to understand why the communists came to power in four Balkan countries and their subsequent "Sovietization".
