An in-depth monograph on the history of cancer among the Old World's population written by experts in paleopathology, a modern multi-disciplinary field related to archaeology, physical anthropology and medicine. The book opens with examples of tumours in animals and some plants. An extensive chapter covers the information on tumours available in the writings from ancient Egypt, Greece, Byzantium and Arabic texts from the Middle Ages and Early Modern Era. Of forty examined cases of mainly malignant tumours, the book lists nine examples of various diagnoses from the Neolithic Period to the Early Modern Era. The Old World tumour database is the source of the overview of documented cases arranged according to diagnostic groups and a summary of the malignant tumour diagnostics and the comparison of their geographic distribution and diachronic growth.
