summary

Although we have long since ceased to encounter university nations at modern universities, in the Middle Ages they were one of the pillars of the university self-government. The book first describes their origin in Bologna and Paris. Both models had an effect on Prague, where however the Parisian model prevailed. The breaking away of the Law Faculty from the university in 1372, at which time the nations separated as well, can be seen as a key moment in their development. And so the nations at both universities are analyzed separately, considering their functions, number of their members, property, social background, mutual conflicts or iconography. At the end of the book there is also a chapter on the continuous results of the prosopograhical research of the Saxon nation of the Prague Juristic University.
