For two centuries, the railway has been a place where the stories of all kinds of passengers intersect – including those of politicians, tourists, students, soldiers, workers, and those who travelled against their will. The collective monograph describes the everyday life of Czech (Czechoslovak) railway transport from all its perspectives, tracing the evolution of railway stations, waiting rooms, and services, the history of fares, travel benefits, and special types of trains, including military and hospital trains. The book also discusses travel culture, dining and sleeping cars, the first tourist guidebooks, cross-border train lines, and the overall importance of railway transport for society, industry, and settlement. Based on systematic research in the archives, the publication reveals the largely unexplored world of everyday railway life and provides a fresh perspective on a phenomenon that has played a crucial role in modern Czech history.
