summary

School Education in France, an analytical and comparative study, is the seventh book in the School Education Abroad series. Although the study maintains the same structure as earlier books in the series, methodologically, it is based on the scholars’ empirical data collected during class observations and interviews with different actors in the educational system (including teachers, directors and inspectors), in addition to scholarly sources. It focuses on the main issues in school education. Czech scholars offer a view of the French system of education "from outside" (chapters on education policy, characteristics of the educational system, the teaching job, curriculum, evaluation, justice in education, language instruction and the specifics of education in overseas territories), while the view "from within" is offered in the last chapter, written by Jean-Yves Rochex, a renowned French researcher and sociologist, who covers the development and current state of inequalities in education in France.
This book is a contribution to works in comparative pedagogy, offering systematic information on a country, whose specifics and issues in education are not well-known to Czech readers. It is intended for researchers and experts on education, teachers and students of faculties of education and other faculties preparing teachers, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic as well as other state administrative staff in charge of education.
