The author follows the development of thinking about man from antiquity to the rise of anthropology as an independent field of science; the evolution of humans as species, based on fossil finds; and the 20th-century subdivision of anthropology into many fields. The book closes with a section on the danger of misusing anthropological knowledge to support racist theories.
