summary

Education is a tool instrumental in increasing social mobility. It is therefore essential to ensure equal access to it for all social groups, irrespective of their social standing and state of health. Disabled persons comprise one of the many social groups jeopardized by inferior access to higher education; they encounter limitations and obstacles which hamper achieving higher levels at different stages of their education.
The book centers on accessibility of university education for the disabled, in other words, a chance for a full integration in the academic life and environment, and a successful completion of their university education. The theoretical part presents different concepts of the key constructs of work, setting them in the framework of the sociology of education, relevant for this theme. The book also presents theories of educational inequalities, with the practical consequences being described in individual stages of the educational process of the disabled.
The quantitative research study carried out at Charles University on the entirety of the university’s disabled student population focuses primarily on the motivation of these students to begin their university study, the aspects that influence the selection of the field of study, the obstacles that students may encounter during their study as well as the sources available to overcome them. Employing this information, the conclusion of the study examines the success rate of disabled students during their university study.
