Hledání Boží tváře

This collective monograph, which is the joint work of theologians and art historians, attempts to capture and describe the various aspects of the human quest for transcendence both in the past and the present. The first part of the book shows how men and women sought and found the face of God by means of the texts of the Old and New Testaments, holy images and philosophical and theological speculations. The second part continues this philosophical and theological inquiry in the works of modern thinkers such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Auguste Comte, Jan Patočka and Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis), and takes note of its expression in modern art. As while coming to know/understand God, believers have always also found themselves, their own faces, and in the modern world this search for self-overlap is no longer considered as necessary, the question whether post-modern man has given up the search for his true determination and final fulfillment becomes the central point of the book.
