summary
The Constitutional Project for Corsica (1764–1765) is a fragmentary work that was never published during Rousseau's lifetime. For Rousseau, however, the issue of Corsican independence was a matter that was close to his heart, as is evident from the care with which he preserved the manuscript and also from the hope he for some time entertained of returning to the theme. The first Czech translation of Rousseau's Constitutional Project for Corsica is accompanied by an extensive introductory study that places the work in the context of the author's life and work, as well as in the historical and political development of Europe and the Corsicans' struggle for independence at that time. It shows that the text has an important place within Rousseau's political writings, as it develops in an interesting way the theses of his other political writings, not only The Social Contract. In doing so, it confirms the unity of Rousseau's view of political affairs, while also highlighting the importance he attached to practical politics.
