summary
“Anthropology of tourism” is a relatively new sub-discipline and thematic area of socio-cultural anthropology, which is being gradually established and has been dynamically growing since the 1970s. In her book, Barbora Půtová describes, analyzes and interprets the subject and basic themes of the anthropology of tourism including its historical transformation in the context of the western world from ancient history through the present. For instance, it deals with the typology of tourism and tourists, authenticity and construction of the notions of tourists, analysis and interpretation of social interaction and the relationship of guests and hosts, the phenomenon of souvenirs and patterns of behavior related to shopping for them. The monograph provides an explanatory framework which enables readers to understand the basic concepts and approaches in the anthropology of tourism, and using case studies it points to the wider historical and cultural context of the objects and processes associated with the current phenomenon of tourism.
