summary

The Finnish education system has been considered one of the best in the world, a rating based on Finnish achievements in international comparisons of students’ educational achievements. Although an interest in the Finnish education system is quite high, until this monograph there had been no systematic description of the Finnish education system.
The book opens with a presentation of the broader context of Finnish education, giving a brief account of the history of Finland and of the current political and economic system. It pays special attention to the national culture and Finnish mentality, as well as to the principles of the educational policy. The description of the educational system covers all of its parts, from preschool education through university and adult education. A specific feature that plays an important role in Finnish education is the high rate of inclusion of students with special needs into regular classes and schools.
The book also covers the principles of teachers’ preparation and other aspects of teaching as a job as well as education for ethnic minorities and immigrants. A chapter on research in education is a new addition to books in this series. The final part of the book contains a critical chapter written by Finnish expert Pertti Kansanen (University of Helsinki) on current issues in Finnish education.
This book can be inspirational for Czech teachers and headmasters as well as people employed in school administration and educational policy areas.
