Is our society depressed? According to the WHO, more than 400 million people suffer from depression, which is one of the biggest health burdens in the world. The media regularly report on the increasing number of people visiting a psychiatrist or taking antidepressants. Is this a sign that our society is ill? Or has it just become more open and stopped stigmatizing mental illness? Is it even possible and desirable to study depression and anxiety disorders as a social phenomenon? Students of the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University together with experts from the fields of religious studies, sociology, anthropology, economics, and psychology bring a varied mosaic of possible perspectives on this very topical issue.
