summary

The book covers selected areas of linear algebra, one of the cornerstones of mathematics encountered by students not only in mathematics university programs. Coming from the world of engineering himself, the author looks at the subject through the lens of a non-mathematician, which is also how he presents it to the reader. Unlike many other textbooks, careful attention is paid to all important details. The explanation is thorough, meticulous, and very clear. Using his great professional and pedagogical expertise, the author clarifies the essentials of the subject and provides the reader with a deep insight into the studied material while trying to make the book as reader-friendly as possible.

While the study covers the traditional areas of linear algebra, the explanation is presented from a rather unusual perspective. In particular, it describes the basic building blocks of the subject, namely vectors and matrices, their products, and the solution of systems of linear equations. In doing so, the text smoothly guides the reader, equipped with the usual secondary school knowledge, into the domain of abstract vector spaces. Following a discussion on measuring distances and angles in such spaces, the book moves on to the issues of orthogonalisation and rigid transformation. The fundamental theorem of algebra on the roots of complex polynomials brings the reader to the problem of eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
