summary
This monograph focuses on the nature of upbringing as a specific type of human behaviour. Using a hermeneutic perspective, it examines ontological points of departure of upbringing in relation to the world, to the society and, finally also to itself. The scholars present contexts in which upbringing originates and the conditions in which it can be developed (solidarity between generations, pedagogical ethos, man's freedom, development of human nature, specific nature of human care, relationship to the other, encounters). They monitor the necessary transformations throughout upbringing and define essential differences between upbringing and activities which influence and shape man's personality, yet have nothing in common with good upbringing, such as leading, training, drill, manipulation, influencing. They view upbringing as an activity striving to preserve continuity (of humankind, culture, values), which however also allows for discontinuity (meaning a potentially new beginning). Last but not least, they examine the question of upbringing and education in the diverse world and point out the fundamental relations of upbringing and education to meaningful coexistence.
