summary
A Geology of Media is based on the perspective of materialist and Post-Anthropocene thinking, which emphasizes the relationship of culture and material facts that condition culture. Jussi Parikka examines the world of media as material part of the geological sphere. For instance, he explores the mining processes which allowed for their creation as well as their afterlife in the form of electronic waste and future fossils. He describes environmental, social and economic context of the new media culture and shatters the illusions about their “purity” and “immateriality.” His book is an important contribution to debates about media technologies, new materialism and Anthropocene as well as a guide to contemporary artistic practice, which responds to these phenomena.
