summary
Unlike other anthropological studies focusing predominantly on settlements in Eastern Slovakia, Jan Ort focused his field research on a village with a reputation of “trouble-free coexistence” among its linguistically and ethnically heterogeneous inhabitants. The book offers an ethnographic critique of this idyllic idea and shows how the current situation is related to historical transformation, the naturalisation of symbolic and material inequalities, borders, and hierarchies, and the ways in which they are negotiated. The outcome is a work full of interesting ethnographic descriptions and insights that collectively provide an answer to one of the main questions of the text: Who is local here?
