Notace znakových jazyků

This monograph analyzes the possibilities in sign language notation, particularly concerning the notation of Czech sign language. The introduction describes the initial European attempts at capturing signs on paper in the 18th and 19th centuries, which represent the first verbal descriptions of signs, sign notation and capturing signs in drawings. It also provides a detailed description of the first notation system based on linguistic principles – the Stockoe notation system, which was created in 1960 for American sign language. This notation system served as a basis for many other notation systems also described in the text. A major part of the publication focuses on possible ways of sign notation of Czech sign language. First, it outlines the "non-notation” methods of sign notation which have been used in the Czech environment such as a verbal description, drawing, photographs, video and computer simulation of a sign. Then, it moves on to a deeper analysis of individual standardized notation systems that can be used for the notation of Czech sign language – the Czech Sign Language Notation System and its modifications, the Edinburgh Nonmanual Coding System, the Hamburg Notation System, SignWriting and the Berkeley Transcription System.
