With a career as a surgeon of sixty years and focusing on many developmental phases this medical field has undergone, the author considers questions related to the development of surgery in the Czech Lands and the traces left in the field by different prominent figures, the technological advances as well as social and political changes. He describes, both seriously and with humor, different experiences from his long career at the Vinohrady, Motol and Pod Petřínem surgical clinics in Prague. In addition, he supplies many personal views, including those on current affairs.
