summary
The book Memoires and Other Manuscripts is a remarkable supplement to the existing publications of the extensive work by this prominent Czech linguist, primarily known as a scientist, organizer and teacher linked with the Prague linguistic school and with the beginnings of Czech English studies. In his Memoires, whose publication was delayed as for a long time it was not politically desirable, Vilém Mathesius writes mainly about his private life, family, childhood and coming of age as well as about his beginnings as a researcher. This distinctive biography, which reveals author's literary abilities, is complemented by poetry from Mathesius' youth between 1892–1901 and a torso of the intended second part of memoires. The texts were prepared for publication by Josef Hladký, the extensive opening essay, linking Mathesius' life with the context of his academic work, and selected bibliography were written by Libuše Dušková and Jan Čermák.
