summary

This textbook is based on a lecture on optics for physics students at the Mathematical-Physical Faculty at Charles University in Prague. The author's intent was to write a text, that could serve as an introduction for the further study of optics, but also be a source of information for students in other fields where advanced optics is not taught. Considering the fact that optics is a traditional part of basic university course of physics, the textbook focuses on classical (not quantum) optics. It does not stop at usual fields (electromagnetic characteristics of light, geometric and instrument optics, light diffraction and interference, coherence of light), but it also covers, although sometimes only in brief, some topics from more modern optics (Fourier optics, fibre optics, laser physics, non-linear optics).
