summary

International relations have been quite turbulent since the end of the Cold War. Nevertheless, one should not overlook the fact that the intensity of conflicts has decreased in comparison with the first as well as the second half of the 20th century. In the last fifty years, the number of wars, genocides, and terrorist acts has dropped – not to zero, but quite noticeably. Casualties are still high and the impact of wars is enormous, yet the number of wars is declining.
The Economics of Security examines international security relations at a time when the pandemic fades and the war in Ukraine escalates. First, it discusses the basics of the economics of security and introduces the US as a superpower, China as a new superpower, and Russia as a declining power. It also highlights the difficulties of exporting democracy. The concluding chapters focus on globalisation and the paradox of progress.
