summary

Arthur Coleman Danto (1924–2013) was one of the most important figures in 20th century analytical philosophy of art. His writings on the ontology and historical conditionality of art have had an undeniable influence on the way we think about contemporary art. This study focuses on Dante's approach to defining art. However, it is not limited to an exposition of the individual characteristics of art, but aims to demonstrate that Danto links the essence of art to the so-called experiential dimension. In contrast to the traditional reading that emphasize the semantic dimension of Dante's definition, it argues that for a long period Danto held the opinion that works of art have not only content but also the capacity to elicit an emotional response on the part of the perceiver, and consequently to transform his or her worldview.
