This is the first time such a book has been presented to the Czech public. Without moralizing or seeking sensation the author looks at prostitution in the Czech Lands at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the beginning of the Czechoslovak Republic. The first section includes the definition of prostitution, a commentary on literature and historical sources and "the oldest profession's" historical development. The next chapter compares individual kinds of prostitution and describes the three main participants: the prostitute, the client and the pimp. The final chapter looks at the problems of sexually transmitted diseases within prostitution. In this book the author has used a wide range of factual information from historical sources, from classical literature and from a large number of regional studies.
