This study by Harlan Lane presents a complex (linguistic, anthropological, historical) view of the representation of the deaf community, the question of sign language and education of the heard of hearing. The scholar takes a clear stance: this community is a linguistic and cultural minority with the right to its own language and cultural values. Lane attempts to find the historic roots of the medicalization of deafness and associated phenomena (oralism) demonstrating how the prejudices forming a negative view of this community were constituted. He also takes a radical standpoint on the ethical issues surrounding cochlear implants. His book is a major contribution to deaf studies and the linguistics of sign language.
