summary
Villa Tugendhat, an iconic work by architect Mies van der Rohe, was commissioned by Mr and Mrs Tugendhat.
The book Behind the Glass is not just a picture of a house. Above all, it tells the story of the family who lived there.
It traces the family’s roots in the Jewish ghetto, follows the growth of their industrial business and the development of their social status under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and during the First Czechoslovak Republic, and describes the moment the family members were forced to flee the Nazis, ending up scattered across the world.
The story of the villa itself is just as fascinating, including its origins, the devastating events of the war and the communist era, the uncertainties of the post-revolutionary years, its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the successful completion of its restoration.
