summary

The modern history of Japan represents an unusually clearly defined period. On the one hand, it begins with a sharp revolutionary start in the form of the restoration of the Meiji in 1868, while on the other hand it disappears from the scene no less dramatically with the end of the military apocalypse in 1945.
The combination of a detailed chronology with an explanatory glossary offers a continuity of narrative with an encyclopedic overview of the key actors, events and concepts. The main emphasis is placed on political and economic history, but the chronology also covers important cultural and social events. Among other things, the manual aims to contribute to the unification and standardization of the widely disparate specialist terminology – in this respect it has a normative ambition.
