summary

The Constitutional Charter adopted on February 29, 1920, is the basic constitutional document of the independent Czechoslovak state. Jan Kuklík follows the story of its origin and its fate up through 1948, when it was replaced by the so-called Ninth-of-May Constitution. The first Czechoslovak constitution is associated with the establishment of an independent state, but also with fateful moments threatening independent Czechoslovak statehood in 1938/1939 and with the hope of its renewal during World War II and in the years after it ended. The Constitutional Charter of 1920 also served as one of the sources of inspiration for the preparation of the new Czech Constitution in 1992.
