summary
Central Europe is an independent entity, which has historically been influenced by its specific division of political powers. The Central European region is generally overlooked for its economic and political development, its geopolitical and geographically strategic importance is however indisputable.
The presented work attempts to define the Central European region in terms of its geographic, economic, political and institutional outlines. It identifies its main characteristics and pays attention to contemporary discourse related to the region within the EU, and confirms the hypothesis that its differences from the other member states of the EU lies mainly in the institutional environment of the Central European countries rather than in their economic efficiency.
The publication, which defines the Central European region as consisting of seven countries, justifies this choice and presents a historical analysis, comparing the countries’ economic development and transformational strategies.
