summary

This book presents interpretations of "Sonnets to Orpheus,” poems from one of Rilke’s core collections of poetry. The original German version of each sonnet is followed by a literal translation, the scholar’s comments and summaries by Hermann Mörchen, German scholar specializing in Rilke and employing Heideggerian phenomenology, and Ernst Leisi, offering a perspective of semantic structuralism. Interpretations through Czech translations are also included and compared (V. Renč, V. Holan, J. Pokorný, T. Vítek, A. Misař, and M. Suchomel). The focus of this book is directed against the pathetization of Rilke’s poetry. The scholar’s own translation of "Sonnets to Orpheus” is included at the end of the book.
