Martin Kučera reconstructs the development of Josef Pekař's ideas and attitudes in 1914–1918, that is during the time period culminating with the foundation of independent Czechoslovakia. This book shows Josef Pekař not only as an excellent historian, but also as a publicly active figure. The detailed analysis of Pekař's experience of the Great War shows the changes that part of the Czech society underwent on the way from Pro-Austrian activism to the acceptance of the independent Czechoslovak State. The book is supplemented by selected documents from the period.
