German rural areas, often neglected in the “big historical picture,” played a substantial and even formative role in the economic, social, political, and cultural development of the Bohemian lands. They were an integral part of socio-economic modernisation processes and national confrontations. The book deals with the foundation and rise of the German agrarian movement under the Habsburg monarchy, with an emphasis on the Bohemian Kingdom. It fills the knowledge gap in the area of the agrarian emancipation of German-populated rural areas based on the principle of class and shared interests, which culminated in the formation of an independent political party – the German Agrarian Party in Bohemia (Deutsche Agrarpartei in Böhmen). The book provides insights into the identity of German farmers/peasants in the process of their civic and national awakening, contributing to a better understanding of the long-term development of the German national community in Bohemia / the Czech lands.
