summary
Alternative Medicine in the Czech Republic describes the sociological context of the phenomenon of alternative medicine, focusing more closely on homeopathy, Chinese medicine and natural healing in the Czech environment. The monograph examines the motivation of both patients who, despite living in the contemporary world of technological miracles, are still interested in methods of treatment that are based on ancient tradition or based on entirely different principle and also of the doctors who study homeopathy or Chinese medicine. In Western civilization, the access to highly specialized and scientific-knowledge based healthcare is part of the modern lifestyle and one of the pillars of the social state. Up to now, we have perceived the monopolization of scientific biomedicine as the only valid medicine as a matter of fact. Ethical, economic and environmental reasons are however so urgent that they compel us to ask questions and open up to new options, viewing them critically and possibly using them in the concept of just, responsive, patient-oriented and sustainable medicine.
The conclusions of this monograph are based on rich research data.
