The book Unpaid Debts of the Past: Greek-German Relations in the Shadow of Nazism presents the issues of Greek-German relations in the period after World War II which have not been sufficiently researched to this day. This richly illustrated historical study of Kateřina Králová, a leading Czech expert in modern history of Greece, is the first comprehensive monograph covering this theme. It primarily focuses on how the Greek society dealt with the heritage of the Nazi occupation, specifically with the question of punishing war crimes. Individual themes are examined from political, social and cultural, economic and legal perspectives, emphasizing that also in this case economic interests played a key role. The lawsuits filed by Greek Nazi victims on the German Federal Government that are still open today indicate that this is still a current theme. Moreover, it exceeds the dimension of Greek-German relations and in fact can be applied to the experience of other countries which had been similarly affected by the Nazi occupation.
