summary

The publication examines the military values of the best Greek warriors, their heroic deeds on the battlefield, and cultural and philosophical ideals, associated with aristeia, a concept that played a significant role in the Greek world. It refers to exceptional bravery in battle, displays of courage, and military values of a man. Other key concepts are closely associated with it, such as aristeion (reward for a heroic achievement), timé (honour), kleos (glory), areté (excellence), kalokagathia (harmony of body and spirit), and andreia and andragathia (bravery).
The analysis of the development and transformation of the ideal of aristeia is both horizontal (across time periods) and vertical (from the point of view of society). A special emphasis is put on the different interpretations of the concept among hippeis, aristocratic cavalry, and hoplites, heavy infantry, who entered the scene after the Hoplite Revolution.
