summary

Neuropathologist František Koukolík has once again set out to answer an old and open question – how and why the brain creates consciousness, and what is the relationship between brain, consciousness and self-consciousness.
The book's third edition examines research into the relationship between the brain and consciousness in the course of the years 2013–23. During that period research methods for investigating the brains of people and animals have expanded and improved in a way that few people could imagine before the first edition in 2003. The half-life of information in the neurosciences is less than five years. Therefore, it was necessary to update the previous, second edition from 2013.
The revised text describes the contemporary definitions of consciousness, the neural correlate and the evolution of consciousness, including self-awareness; altered states of consciousness such as sleep, anaesthesia, hypnosis, meditation and the effects of psychedelics; some types of damaged consciousness, for example comas, functional disorders, autism, schizophrenia and depression; the question of free will; and also how much consciousness is influenced by the culture in which we have grown up and live.
