The book is a survey of different approaches to the Maya religion as they appeared throughout the history of Maya studies. The publication discusses predominant theoretical and methodological approaches adopted in the discipline and demonstrates the relationship of Maya studies and religious studies, especially in the second half of the 20th century. In addition, it explores the inconspicuous influence exerted by Western esotericism and later alternative spirituality, whose concepts partially penetrated the discipline.
