The Czech Medical Chamber is well known to all of us, perhaps even taken for granted. But if we look back at history or at other countries today, we find that neither the existence nor any specific form of a medical chamber can be taken for granted. Drawing on a plethora of primary sources, the author of the monograph seeks answers to fundamental questions related to the professionalisation of medicine and the formation of a professional association of physicians in Cisleithania. The sound theoretical foundation of this work is enriched by a captivating story about the search for an agreement between the state and physicians, with an unexpected outcome.
