summary

The book is a collective work of both academic and hands-on experts. Pastoral care is presented as a theological reflection on Christian ministry activities provided by the churches in a contemporary pluralistic society. It is discussed in the contexts of different periods of historical development, and its contemporary conceptions from an ecumenical perspective are shown. The book especially focuses on chaplain services in public institutions (health facilities, army, prisons, social services) and pastoral work with selected target groups. Many of the authors of the hands-on experience chapters are chaplains or pastoral workers. Thus, for anyone from the general community of experts interested in the topic and for students of theology or social, charitable, and diacionic work, the book serves as an introduction to pastoral care as a discipline of practical theology and provides an insight into the ways in which the Churches in the Czech Republic think about and develop their Christian ministry in contemporary Czech society.
