summary
Erazim Kohák's famous book presents a significant contribution to the discussion about ecological ethics. It begins with a look at the relationship of humankind towards the other inhabitants of the earth, 'animals', in all its cruelty, tenderness and ambiguity. From an analysis of these relationships the author proceeds to a contemplation about the relationship of humankind towards nature as a whole. Kohák guides the reader through contemporary ideas about nature and its value. The book also provides an overview of strategies of ecological activism – both "subjectivizing" strategies (practical "flannel" approaches, deep ecology, etc.) and "objectifying" strategies that seek the root of the crisis in the objective conditions of life on Earth (GAIA theory, sociobiology, systems theory). In the final chapter, the reader will find the author's personal views and beliefs.
