summary
Deserted medieval villages represent a fascinating historical resource, often considered essential evidence of the crisis in European society at that time. The monograph provides a summary of the principal empirical approaches adopted in the fields of study investigating this topic, relevant economic theories, and existing interpretations of dilapidation and desertion. The author suggests to regard deserted villages as an indicator of adaptability and resistance of pre-industrial rural communities, and through this prism, he analyses selected regions and localities on the borders of Czechia and Germany. The study is unique and experimental, as it combines an in-depth analysis of written, cartographic, and onomastic resources, findings of traditional archaeological prospection methods, and an analysis of relics identified using modern remote sensing methods.
