summary

This study is the first probe in the Czech context to systematically examine the English translation equivalents of the three most commonly used Czech prepositions. Frequency dictionaries of Czech and English show that prepositions are among the most frequently used parts of speech in both languages. The translation of Czech prepositions into English is thus one of the most common sources of errors by Czech speakers in English. Thanks to the parallel corpus (the InterCorp project, ICNC, Faculty of Arts, Charles University), a sufficiently large and representative sample was available for use in gaining information on the distribution of the prepositions "v/ve," "na" and "s/se" in Czech literature, and corresponding distribution of their English equivalents. The goal of the study is to at least partially fill in the gaps in the contrastive description of prepositions and thus enrich the theoretical description of this part of speech, and also to provide reliable data for the practical needs of applied linguistics, translation and lexicography.
