summary

The book Teachers of Teachers presents qualitative research on the profession of university teachers, their instruction of future elementary and high school teachers, and their professional development and academic careers. A special focus is placed on experts teaching pedagogy and psychology, as well as those teaching methodologies in particular fields of study. The book features both theoretical studies and surveys of different scopes exploring the above-mentioned areas. The respondents were university teachers as well as their current and former students. The principal research method employed was an interview, supplemented with observations and semi-structured free writing with essential questions. The surveys and their findings focus on different aspects. Apart from presenting serious reflections on the (societal) values of the teaching profession and its potential to change things, the surveys also address very personal profession-related questions, the pleasures and sorrows, the quest of finding oneself in the role of teacher, and critiques of the academic environment. The key recurrent topics are “the search for the optimal model of one’s own teaching work,” “solving the (never-ending) problem in the relationship between theory and practice in teacher education,” and the “relationship between science, research, and the practical teaching role in the preparation of future teachers.”
