summary

Aurelius Augustinus (354–430) is the most prominent theological teacher of Western Christianity and an exceptional philosophical thinker who drew extensively on classical Platonic, Stoic, and – to a limited extent – Aristotelian works. Composing a remarkable Christian synthesis, he introduced concepts presented therein to medieval and modern era thinking. It is very difficult to find a topic in European philosophy that does not draw inspiration from Augustine’s works, be it the issues of time, freedom, love, or the depths of human unconsciousness. The seven individual studies featured in the book discuss these traditional Augustinian topics as well as various lesser-known issues, such as mental concentration, the Aristotelian category of relation, or the conception of art.
