summary

The history of sociology could be followed as the development of social theories or as the development of research projects. The beginnings of sociology are not commonly related to empirical research. It took social researchers more than half a century become established and for the scientific community to recognize empirical social research as a legitimate and much needed part of academic sociology.
This book covers the half-century development of the research efforts of dozens of sociologists and their finally famous social research projects, from their beginnings at the end of the 19th century to the final recognition of their research as a legitimate part of sociology at the end of the 1940s. It focuses on those research projects that could clearly demonstrate the gradual development and progress of the research methodology. Another important criterion for the selection of the projects was the extent to which the scholars allowed access to view their workshops. This book aims to present empirical research as a source of knowledge for a cumulative construction of a social theory as well as an empirical social research based on theoretical knowledge and respecting a social theory. It presents sixteen famous and eight extraordinary social research projects of the first half of the 20th century.
