summary

The human organism deprivation due to hypokinesis poses a threat to post-industrial society. The deprivation has its origin in fixed hypokinetic monotonous routines and stereotypes of modern man. This fact refers to the increase in the sensitivity level of proprioception, and therefore the reduction of tolerance to mechanical environmental loading. The preventive measures must be identified and rectified on the basis of both technical (personal protective equipment, forensic procedures, etc.) and sociobiological aspects (health and activity regimes, training, education, kinesiotherapy, etc.).
There is circumstantial evidence that suggests the possibility of resulting degenerative changes which have the cumulative and frequently irreversible effect, for example, structural changes in bone, muscle and cartilaginous tissues also cause a shift in rheological properties.
The impact on functional and processual system is not fully understood yet (decrease of sensorimotor performance and reliability, decision-making ability failure, etc.). The failure of psychomotor reactions at work environment – especially man-machine interactions also belongs to the above mentioned group.
In this critical review the structural and functional issues are discussed at three levels: at the scale of single tissue and organs, organ systems, and finally, at the supreme scale – whole organs. The difficulty of discovering and defining the explicit identifiers which describe the consequences of hypokinetic activity for the human organism lies in the complexity of the problem.
