This collection of the author’s extensive life’s work makes available 26 essays published in the years 1957–2021 in various journals and specialist periodicals. The structure of the volume reflects the breadth of the author’s scope, ranging from an interest in economic and social history (e.g. the essay ‘Towards a Characterisation of the Crisis of Feudalism in the 16th–17th Centuries’) to cultural history (the history of European nationalist movements in the 19th century), from archival study to comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of historical changes.
Among the selected texts we also find several more general essays that attempt to make available to a broader readership topics still debated today, such as nationalism or patriotism, or reflect on more general issues, such as the historical specificity of Europe, memory and historical consciousness/awareness.
