summary
This monograph strives to provide a complex analysis of the dynamics of the relationships of Russia and Central-Asian countries after the breakup of the U.S.S.R. The influence of Russia in this area has been gradually diminishing, nevertheless, the dependence of the local regimes on the former centre still persists, although in a specific way. This dependence and its forms are the subject of the author's scrutiny on many levels – political, military, economic and social/humanitarian. Although Central Asia appears to be a homogeneous space cemented by the its soviet past, more than 15 years after the U.S.S.R.'s breakup major differences show in the field of the individual countries' policy towards the former centre. Moreover, these relationships frequently underwent major and contradictory corrections. These factors make this comparison more difficult and call for writing specific case studies.
