The collection was created as a tribute to the late Prof. Eduard Gombár (1952–2025), a prominent Arabist, historian of the Near East, and diplomat. The introduction features selected memoirs of his students, complementing his previously published biography. The reminiscences of the protagonist himself, reflecting on his life and professional career, are also particularly insightful.
The collection of texts by Prof. Gombár’s students and colleagues spanning multiple generations includes contributions on the theoretical approaches to Oriental studies as well as the history of and current developments in the Orient, ranging from Muslim Spain to Central Asia and Afghanistan. These works demonstrate Prof. Gombár’s breadth of inspiration (both geographical and thematic) and sense for thorough analysis, a legacy that he has left to his followers.
