summary

The difference between ancient and medieval philosophy and philosophy after Descartes is usually identified in the fact that ancient and medieval philosophy does not work with a notion that would exactly correspond to our notion of consciousness. This view is however only partially correct. On the one hand, interpreters and commentators of ancient authors do not hesitate to use the term consciousness in their exposition, and on the other, the notion of consciousness is burdened by multiple meanings, which serve to prevent making any definite decision. This book attests to this very fact. The seven essays contained in it cover different approaches to consciousness presented in three key periods – early modern philosophy, German classical philosophy and contemporary analytical philosophy.
