summary
This collective monograph theorizes the forms of contemporary musical culture in Central and Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia) through specifically focused studies. It does so from the perspective of musicology informed by cultural analysis, and promýšlí reflects on more general theoretical concepts in local contexts. The main themes of sound, gender and identity procházejí run through all chapters. The aim is to understand the broader cultural meanings and effects of a wide variety of musical events, both live and mediated. Studies focus, for example, on the music of female composers, the politics of gender and queer identities in music video, the performance of masculinity in musical subculture, questions of voice and corporeality, as well as the construction of local and national identities through folklore. The book thus offers unconventional perspectives on a range of socially and politically relevant topics. It is the first musicological publication of this kind in Czech. Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, thinking about music and sound here becomes part of the debates in a range of other humanities disciplines, such as cultural studies, gender studies, theatre and film studies, and similar.
